IMPACT-BASED FORECASTING AND WARNING SYSTEMS

Foresight and forecasting for coastal hazards, helping communities mitigate storm surges and flooding impacts.

CLIMATE FORESIGHT AND LITERACY

Climate foresight and literacy solutions enable communities to prepare for and adapt to climate change by integrating science, technology, and accessible knowledge.

IT CONSULTING

Through our international partners in the US and South America, Stellar provides IT consulting services for climate-challenged rural and coastal communities.

OUR CHANGING WORLD

Explore the pressing issues and why they matter in the context of our rapidly changing world.

THE ISSUE

Many of us in the Atlantic region and Canada have chosen to live in low-elevation coastal zones, putting ourselves at risk for the effects of flooding and coastal erosion.

Despite the well-known challenges related to climate change, we continue to do so in rapidly growing coastal towns and rural areas. This is a shared concern for coastal communities around the world – however, it is not too late to act.

In 2021, 14.9% of people in Canada lived within 10 km of the coastline. Of these, over 3.2 million people were on the Pacific Coast; 2.2 million were on the Atlantic Coast. Almost 1/2 million Canadians live within less than 5 meters above sea level. 70% of the Nova Scotia population lives in coastal communities.

WHY IT MATTERS

While coastal hazards are lurking on the horizon, the devastating impact of these disasters can be prevented. Soft and hard coastal protection acts as a line of defense. As such, continuous and innovative upgrades are necessary to respond to rising challenges.

Coastal adaptation planning and increased education help communities adapt and improve long-term sustainability against loss of lives and properties.

This is all aided by progressive public policy and leadership. Stellar believes we must act with urgency to prepare for immediate emergencies, climate change, and extreme weather risks.

These risks are only going to get more challenging, motivating the creation of the initial working, digital triplet in southern Nova Scotia. It will ultimately comprise what’s called a ‘single pane of glass’, shared by all emergency response entities, holographically projected in emergency command posts and carried in 2D and 3D to citizens through myriad channels, legacy and new.

WHAT WE DO

1

DIGITAL TRIPLETS

We are building Digital Triplets of Canadian rural, coastal areas to provide targeted communication and alerts that people need for long-term climate change adaptation and during environmental emergencies – for improving disaster resilience – as well as day-to-day notifications.

2

DYNAMIC VIRTUAL COPIES

Digital twins, or ai-powered triplets, are dynamic virtual copies of physical assets, processes, systems, and/or environments that look and behave identically to real-world counterparts.

3

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

Stellar Futures’ StellarAlerts.ai will be the first regional digital triplet in Canada and will use 3D GIS, generative artificial intelligent and a new digital twinning tool from the University of New Brunswick known as Stage².

HOW IT WORKS

OUR 1ST REAL-TIME, 3D DIGITAL TRIPLET

Stellar is currently developing our first triplet, with proofs of concept trialed in spring 2024 on 600 km² of the scenic South Shore of Nova Scotia. Our goal is to further develop and scale our triplets regionally, and province-wide.

PUBLIC ALERTING/WARNING TOOL

When fully implemented, this revolutionary new public alerting/warning tool will be especially valuable due to Canada’s extensive coastline and the proximity of NS communities to the sea.

Our bespoke services include foresight and forecasting services, smart alerting and warning systems, real-time 3D virtual command displays, and Stage2 digital twinning services (in partnership with Spatial One at the University of New Brunswick).

Small is our superpower in Nova Scotia, thus enabling collaborations that result in magic.

OUR PARTNERS

We collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-lingual experts from the Maritimes, and around the world.
